Thursday Clipper?

Today's storm turned out to be yet another fluke. We got ripped off again, but atleast no one predicted it to be big this time. Just some flurries and light sleet pellets are all we got here in Towson. We do have a chance for another storm Wednesday night into Thursday. I believe that it will be a fairly small storm. It's a clipper that will drop down out of Canada and move rapidly to our area. Clippers do not generally give us a good snowfall, but our temperatures will be just so cold. That means snow ratios could be 20:1 or 30:1. That means for every inch of precipitation, there is 2o or 30 inches of snow. This allows much more snow to fall in a shorter time period. We had a clipper earlier in the year, and it actually gave us about 3-6 inches of snow. That is considered fairly good for a clipper. The GFS model is trying the take the clipper over our area, and then blow up a big coastal storm. This is not very likely, but there is always a chance. If this were to happen, we could see much more significant accumulations depending on the track. Keep you fingers crossed. Nice Little Snow...How about this weekend?

So we ended up getting a decent snowfall out of this whole thing. This is the second time that a storm has been downplayed, and the second time it has produced a good amount of snow. Here in Towson we got about 4" before the storm started to calm down, but now we are dealing with sleet and freezing rain. Some streets may re-freeze tonight so watch for slick, or icy spots during the morning commute. Some schools may be delayed or closed. A look into the future shows more storms that could affect the area. One this weekend, one early next week; and finally one later next week. Temperatures should be plenty cold to support snow so we will have to wait it out. I will analyze the storm this weekend in a later post, and I will try to get a snow map out either tomorrow night, or early Saturday. The storm will affect the area Saturday and Saturday night, but we really need to hammer down these details. Who knows? Maybe we should downplay the next storms, and they will all probably be doozies. Stay updated, and LET IT SNOW!

Snow upgraded to 2-5"

The snow that was suppossed to be considerably light is now considerably moderate. Schools are closing left and right, but now we have to deal with sleet as well. The rain/snow line isn't moving as fast as originally thought, and cold air damming is starting to take place. The colder air is entrenched across much of the region. The snow should continue at a good clip until 6 p.m. or so, before a mix or changeover occurs. Stay updated and LET IT SNOW!

Slippery Roads

The roads out there are very slippery. I just came home from school and saw numerous accidents. Dont attempt any hills if you may happen to go out. Be safe everybody!

Update

I checked the radar a little after 10 and saw that it indicated that snow was falling in the region. Some of you are probably wondering why the radar shows snow when it is not actually snowing, but that is actually normal. Allot of times it is snowing but because the air is so dry the precipitation evaporates before it can reach the ground. It is currently only accumalating in isolated grassy areas. As of now dont expect much of an accumalation and travel delays should only become expected if it begins to rain and then freezes overnight. We'll keep you updated.

Morning Update

The NWS is raising their snow amounts to 1-3 inches before the mix with rain occurs. I am still hesitant to say that much due to what has happened to our area all winter long. Rain and no snow. Snow is streaking into Southern Md., but most of it isn't reaching the ground just yet. Stay updated!

Quick Evening Update

Snow should reach area anywhere from mid-morning to noon. I am reluctant to up the amounts so I will stick to my guns on this one. Up to an inch is possible, but probably less. This just isn't our storm, but into next week there are some good signs.

Some snow Thursday?

Just a quick post here. There is a chance that tomorrow we could see some snow in the morning that will eventually turn into freezing rain and sleet. We may see up to an inch of snow before the changeover occurs. Roads could get slick, especially for the commute home if temperatures haven't warmed up enough to melt ice. The high tomorrow is around 34 or 35, but if it manages to stay colder, we could get a little more snow or ice. The warmer air from the storm is expected to ride in between the cold air, therefore changing snow to the rain or sleet. Stay updated at www.marylandwx.net
